I have a theory: Feeling like you’re going to lose is the same thing as losing. You may disagree. Obviously one happens in your head and one happens in actuality. There is some beauty in the blur as things are changing. That smeary moment of endings and beginnings—like runners exchanging a baton—there’s always a little overlap. I have been foolish and wishful and blind time and again—all in the name of love. Thank God they didn’t shoot Seabiscuit. I recently was flying home from the holidays and decided to play a little game with The Universe. Before I got on the plane I made this little request: Have the person sitting next to me teach me something—something about career, writing, relationships, life, myself. I’ve got 5 hours in 1st class and the liquor will flow—let’s make the most of it. Think of the list you’ve made for yourself over the years—all of the tangible and intangible things you feel would make you happy if only they were yours. |
