My Funny Valentine

Your attempt at perfection is exhausting me.

I mean, really? And also, why? All of those flaws you are constantly picking at—you need to stop it immediately—unless your flaw is chewing with your mouth open. Correct that one NOW.

Here’s a secret. Lean in. The glory of your imperfections—all those little things you hate about yourself, well, those make the rest of us HEART you.

I mean it…HEART you very much. We refer to it as your personality. It makes you YOU.

Unless your list includes some form of abuse, lying, stealing, anything Commandment related really, you’ve probably spent a lot of time making your *Icky Things About Me* list 5x longer than necessary.

I bet if you asked your closer friends what you could work on that would make you a better person they would say something like, “Maybe you could be on time more often” and “Possibly stop beating the crap out of yourself for breathing air”.

Speaking of close friends, what if that critical eye we used on ourselves was somehow softened into the kinder, gentler eye we reserved for those we cared about. We if we started treating ourselves more like we would a friend. Think of all the extra time we’d have on our hands…since we wouldn’t be berating ourselves for the multitude of imperfections that are about to rock the earth clean off its axis.

We each spend a lot of time metaphorically looking into the mirror. And the reflection we see is not always seen with clear eyes. Each of us is the harshest judge in the land and court is held every day in our own heads with a highly partial jury made up of this one jackass…our self.

Lighten up. Treat yourself as a friend would. The rest of us think you rock.
